FAQ
1. What types of rubber flooring are available?
-
Types: Rubber flooring is available in several formats:
- Square Interlocking Tiles: Individual interlocking squares (20"x20", with borders available that add 1" inch to whatever side they are attached to) that can be arranged in various patterns.
- Straight Edge 6'x4' Mats: These tiles are straight edged and fit side by side evenly.
- Interlocking 6'x4' Mats: These tiles fit together like puzzle pieces.
- Best option: The best type depends on your space. Smaller interlocking tiles offer flexibility, mats are great for large areas, and larger interlocking tiles are best for temporary or DIY projects.

2. How durable is rubber flooring?
- Longevity: Rubber flooring is known for its durability. With proper maintenance, it can last 10–20 years, depending on what it is used for and the level of foot traffic.
- Resistance: Rubber flooring is highly resistant to wear, scuffs, scratches, and stains. It can withstand heavy use, making it ideal for high-traffic areas like gyms, schools, and commercial spaces.
3. Is rubber flooring slip-resistant?
- Slip Resistance: Yes, rubber flooring is naturally slip-resistant, even when wet, which is why it’s often used in gyms, bathrooms, kitchens, and other high-traffic or wet areas. The texture (smooth or raised) also contributes to traction. GrytFit rubber flooring is available in both smooth and pebble top finishes.
4. How do I clean and maintain rubber flooring?
- Routine Cleaning: Sweep or vacuum regularly to remove dust and dirt. Mop with warm water and a mild, non-abrasive soap or pH-balanced floor cleaner. Avoid harsh chemicals like bleach or ammonia.
- Stain Removal: For tough stains, use a magic eraser or a damp cloth with mild soap. For grease or oil, use a mixture of mild soap and warm water, and scrub with a soft brush.
- Drying: Always dry the floor after cleaning to avoid moisture buildup or slippery areas.

5. What are the installation requirements?
- DIY or Professional: Rubber flooring can be installed by yourself, especially if using interlocking tiles. For larger projects, professional installation may be recommended to ensure seamless, precise installation. Tools that we have found helpful for DIY installation are a tape measure, pencil/pen, sharp utility knife and a large T-square and/or carpenter square. *Please reach out to us at support@grytfit.com for recommendations for your specific project.
- Installation Time: The time needed depends on the area’s size and type of rubber flooring. DIY installations of interlocking tiles in a single room in your home can take a few hours, while large projects may take a day or more.
- Subfloor: The subfloor should be clean, dry, and level. Rubber flooring can be installed directly over most existing floors, but some subfloors may require preparation, such as applying a moisture barrier.
6. Is GrytFit rubber flooring eco-friendly?
- Recycled Rubber: GrytFit mats are produced using internally recycled rubber tires allowing us to create a 100% zero waste material process, making them an eco-friendly choice. Recycled rubber flooring reduces landfill waste and conserves natural resources.
- Non-Toxic: GrytFit Rubber flooring is non-toxic and safe for children and pets. Our products are made without VOC's (volatile organic compounds), improving indoor air quality.
7. What are the benefits of rubber flooring over other materials?
- Comparison: Rubber flooring is more durable, slip-resistant, and cushioned compared to hardwood, tile, and vinyl. It’s easier to maintain, resistant to scuffing, and more forgiving on joints, which makes it ideal for high-traffic or active spaces like gyms.
- Versatility: Unlike hardwood or tile, rubber flooring can handle high-impact use without cracking or breaking, making it a better choice for heavy-use areas.
8. How is rubber flooring affected by temperature or moisture?
- Outdoor Use: Rubber flooring can be used outdoors, as it is resistant to UV rays and moisture. However, in extremely cold climates, rubber can become stiff, so it’s best suited for areas with moderate temperatures.
- Expansion and Contraction: Rubber flooring may expand or contract slightly with temperature changes, so it's important to leave expansion gaps along the edges when installing. This tends to happen mostly when using rubber rolls and large pieces but can happen with mats as well.
9. Is rubber flooring available in different thicknesses?
- Thickness Options: Rubber flooring typically ranges from 1/8 inch to 1 inch thick. Thicker floors provide more cushioning and sound absorption, making them ideal for gyms or areas with heavy equipment. Thinner options are suitable for areas with less traffic.
- Recommended Thickness: For gyms or high-traffic areas, a thickness of 1/2" inch to 3/4" inch is ideal. GrytFit rubber flooring is 3/4" thick which can withstand significant use like heavy machinery and dropping weights.
10. How is rubber flooring rated for soundproofing?
- Noise Reduction: Rubber flooring is naturally sound-absorbent and our GrytFit 3/4" mats can reduce noise from banging weights and heavy equipment impacts by 20-25 dB! Conversely, rubber flooring that is 1/2" in thickness can reduce noise by 10-15 dB. Rubber flooring also helps reduce noise from footsteps or conversations, making it a popular choice for multi-family buildings, gyms, and offices.
11. Can rubber flooring be repaired or replaced?
- Repair: Minor damage such as scuffs, stains, or small tears can often be repaired by cleaning, using a rubber adhesive, or replacing individual tiles. If the damage is more significant, you may need to replace the affected tiles or sections.
- Replacement: Individual tiles can be replaced without needing to replace the entire floor, making it easy to maintain rubber flooring.
